Under the name of Cathedral cove, Te Whanganui-A-Hei gathers several magical and beautiful places. Located to the East of the New Zealand, it is the first marine reserve of the peninsula from Coromandel in New Zealand (the Waikato region). It was established in 1992 to preserve the marine habitat in the area of Motukorure, Moturoa, Motueka and Mahurangi Islands. We have so many wonderful beaches with fine sand, turquoise water and lush vegetation.
Cathedral Cove is named for the natural arch located there. It links Mare’s Leg Cove to Cathedral Cove. The Gemstone Bay and Stingray Bay are also located on the reserve.
This site served teams to Disney for the movie the Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian the (2008).

Geologic composition
The cliffs surrounding Cathedral Cove are made of volcanic rocks, the Ignimbrite debris. It is a rock formed of lava debris from a fiery cloud (volcanic particles brought to high temperature and gas, ash and blocks of variable size Compound hurtling down the slopes of a volcano) and welded before their cooling. They were produced by explosive volcanic eruptions about eight million years ago. An explosive eruption is a volcanic eruption characterised by the emission of lava fragmented in the atmosphere, in contrast to the effusive eruptions which emit mainly fluid lavas in the form of lava flows.
Training of the Cathedral cove
Cathedral cove is formed by the surge of seawater on the cliff. It grew through the erosion of sea water through the cracks of the cliff. Those are the most fragile areas to erosion because it is in these places that the debris of rocks are most easy to detach from the cliff.
Over the years, the sea will take away the rock, which will enlarge the hole in the cliff. This will allow to create the cellars, such as Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) or Etretat.
The erosion continued, the rocks supporting the roof of the Ark will become less and less resistant. And after a while, the roof will collapse thus forming solitary spikes in the ocean.
